Every year, tens of thousands of people apply for an Italian passport through jus sanguinis, i.e. by right of blood. 1. Investor visas

Also called “Golden Visas,” these programs offer temporary or permanent residency in exchange for investment, usually in a local business or real estate. Typically, these investments must be held for a fixed number of years. In many cases, golden visa holders become eligible for citizenship after a set timeframe, usually around 5 years. 

Popular golden visas include the following countries:

• Portugal – one of Europe’s most popular residency-by-investment programs. It allows non-EU citizens to obtain residency in Portugal through qualifying investments. Requires a minimum €500,000 investment in a Portuguese business fund. 
• Spain – offers non-EU nationals a streamlined path to residency in Spain through investment. Options include a minimum €500,000 investment in Spanish real estate, or a €1 million bank deposit.
• Greece – one of the most affordable and accessible residency-by-investment programs in Europe. Requires a minimum investment of €250,000 in property, which is the lowest threshold among Europe’s golden visas. Other options include a €400,000 deposit in a Greek bank. 
• Cyprus – offers permanent residency through the purchase of a new real estate project worth at least €300,000.
• Malta – although a recent EU court ruling puts the future of Malta’s golden passport in doubt, the country still offers an investor visa. Requirements include a payment of at least €28,000, as well as renting (€10,000/year) or buying (€300,000+) worth of property.
• Canada – entrepreneurs are eligible for permanent residency in Canada through a startup visa. You must create a qualifying business that is innovative and scalable, as well as obtain a letter of support from an accredited investor group. 
• United States – the EB-5 visa offers foreign investors and their families a direct route to permanent U.S. residency (Green Card) in exchange for a qualifying investment that stimulates the U.S. economy and creates jobs. Requirements include a minimum $800,000 investment in a business that creates at least 10 full-time jobs for U.S. workers. 

2. Digital nomad visas

A digital nomad or remote work visa allows foreigners to live and work remotely for an overseas employer. Unlike traditional work visas, digital nomad visas are typically granted to individuals who are employed by a foreign company or work as freelancers with clients outside the host country. 3. Citizenship by investment (CBI)

For wealthy people born in countries with weak passports, CBI represents a pathway to greater travel freedom. It can also provide a “Plan B” in the event of unrest in your home country.

In recent years, European Union countries such as Cyprus and Malta have terminated their golden passport programs. Caribbean island nations like St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, Grenada, and Antigua & Barbuda have also raised their prices substantially due to rising demand. These developments underscore the urgency of leveraging CBI programs sooner rather than later. 

4. Citizenship by descent 

Most nations confer citizenship based on jus sanguinis, where eligibility is determined based on the nationality of one or both of your parents. Some countries, though, maintain looser requirements, allowing foreigners to claim citizenship through grandparents or more distant relatives. 

EU member states where citizenship can be obtained through grandparents include Ireland, Italy, Romania, Hungary, and Spain. Other countries allow you to claim citizenship if your ancestors fled due to Nazi persecution during World War Two, including Austria, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. 

5. U.S. state residency

For U.S. citizens and residents, the state where you’re officially domiciled significantly affects your tax status. Some states, such as California and New York, feature tax rates that top out at 13.3% and 10.9%, respectively. Many states also impose taxes on capital gains.
